Isle of Dogs looks at the land of Yeongjongdo through a utopian and mythical lens, allegorically revealing the hidden side of real-world land reclamation projects and the values that are being buried.

The narrative features a god, a prophet, ascetics, and a "revelation." One day, when the castle is taken by dogs, a prophet brought into existence by god delivers a "revelation" to reclaim it, and the ascetics follow. However, as the revelations—progressing through building faith, pillars, or foundations—unfold, they shatter and fragment the symbols of divinity. Questions brought into existence by god, or questions brought into existence by the prophet: faith surrounded by misunderstandings and conjectures continues blindly, much like the "new town fantasy" in reality, yet what lies behind it remains obscured and uncertain.

The urban fantasy—in other words, the "Concrete Utopia." The twilight of a new town carries a guaranteed utopia that is still fictional yet bound to arrive. The fantasy fed on hope inflates at the speed of its own desire, growing into a gigantic entity while simultaneously burying the land and memories that once existed beneath it. In the northern part of Yeongjongdo, near Midan City (currently Golden Terra City), a massive infrastructure centered around a casino was scheduled to be built. A guaranteed golden future, a dreamlike city civilization! However, with the Midan City project temporarily suspended due to a series of events, the developer departed with the funds, completing the concrete utopia only when it became a truly unreachable future. In 2025, inside that building—now reduced to a framework resembling a wrecked pirate ship—lives a single dog. The sound of its barking, floating and looping between the structural frames, lingers in the space like a phantom limb pain.

Isle of Dogs questions a reality that grants excess power—surpassing all values inside and outside the island—to a massive concrete utopia that seems virtually substance-less, while rendering everything else invisible.

As a first step to escape from a concrete world that fills every breathing hole and crack of the land to make it smooth—.

< 개들의 섬 > 은 영종도의 땅을 유토피아/신화적 시선으로 바라보며, 현실에서의 간척사업이 지닌 이면, 사장되는 가치들에
대한 이야기를 우화적으로 드러낸다.

이야기에는 신과 예언자, 수행자, 그리고 ‘계시’가 존재한다. 어느 날, 성이 개로부터 빼앗기게 되었을 때. 신으로부터 존재하게 된 예언자는 성을 되찾기 위한 ‘계시’를 말하고, 수행자들은 이를 따른다. 그러나, 믿음을 쌓거나/기둥을/토대를 세우는 식으로 진행되는 계시들은 진행될수록 신성의 상징들을 깨트리며 분절된다.
신으로부터 존재하게 된 질문들, 혹은 예언자로 부터 존재하게 된 질문들. 오해와 억측으로 둘러싸인 믿음은 마치 현실에서의 ‘신도시 환상’과 같이 맹목적으로 이어지지만, 그 배후는 묘연한 태로 흐려진다.

도시 환상-다른 말로, ‘콘크리트 유토피아’. 신도시라는 황혼은 아직은 허구이지만 분명히 도래할, 보장된 유토피아를 담지한다. 희망을 먹고 자란 환상은 그 바램의 속도만큼 미친듯이 몸을 불리며 거대한 몸체를 지니지만 동시에 그 아래 존재했던 땅과 기억들을 사장한다. 영종도의 북쪽, 미단시티(현 골든테라시티) 인근은 카지노를 중심으로 거대 인프라가 생길 예정이었다.

그러나 일련의 사건들로 미단시티 사업이 잠정 중단된 지금. 시행사는 오히려 돈을 가지고 떠났고, 정말 닿을 수 없는 미래가 되며 비로소 완성된 콘크리트 유토피아. 2025년 현재, 난파된 해적선 같은 골조만 남은 그 건물 안에는 개 한 마리만이 살고있다. 골조 사이사이를 떠다니며 루프하는 개 짖는 소리는 마치 환상통같이 공간을 맴돈다.

< 개들의 섬 > 은 실질적으로는 실체가 없는듯 보이는 거대 콘크리트 유토피아에 섬 내외의 모든 가치를 초과하는 힘을 부여하고, 이를 제외한 모든 것을 비가시화하는 현실에 대한 질문이다.

모든 땅의 숨구멍과 틈을 메꾸고 매끈하게 만드는 콘크리트 세계에서 탈출하기 위한 첫 번째 걸음으로서-.
